Homonyms are words which have the same spelling and pronunciation as each other but different meanings and origins. 

Homophones are words which have the same pronunciation as each other but different spellings and meanings. 


Homographs
Words with different pronunciation, meanings and origins but the same spelling.  In order to work out which pronunciation and which meaning is appropriate, you need to be aware of the context.
* Homographs may or may not have the same pronunciations.

Examples:
  • Would you set the VCR to record /ri'ko:d/ The Simpsons for me tonight?
    I spent a lot of time listening to records /'reko:ds/.

  • I can't read /ri:d/ your writing.
    She picked up the letter and read /red/ it.
  • I always use /ju:z/ the same shampoo.
    Try to make good use /ju:s/ of your time.
  • Plants can't live /liv/ without water.
    U2 is singing live /laiv/ on TV tonight.

  • A sudden gust of wind /wind/ blew the paper out of his hand.
    I hate watches that you have to wind /waind/.

  • Can you see me in the photo? I'm in the back row /r..u/ on the left.
    He had just had a row /rau/ with his wife.


A few Homographs

  • agape – with mouth open OR love
  • bass – type of fish OR low, deep voice
  • bat -  piece of sports equipment OR an animal
  • bow – type of knot OR to incline
  • down – a lower place OR soft fluff on a bird
  • entrance – the way in OR to delight
  • evening – smoothing out OR after sunset
  • fine – of good quality OR a levy
  • learned – past tense of learn OR knowledgeable
  • minute – tiny OR unit of time
  • moped – was gloomy OR motorcyle
  • number – more numb OR numerical value
  • row – line OR argument OR propel a boat
  • sewer – drain OR person who sews
  • wave – move the hand in greeting OR sea water coming into shore
  • wound – past tense of wind OR to injure



Activity
Each sentence contains two homographs. The definition or a synonym of one of the homographs follows the sentence. Type out the homograph that matches the definition or synonym.
1. Tracey didn’t feel well after falling into the well. in good health
2. Jim hunts, but he does not shoot does. female deer
3. There was a big row in the first row of the theater. fight
4. Let’s wind up the kite string before the wind gets too wild. moving air
5. If the judges are fair, our rabbit will win a ribbon at the fair. just
