Short and Long

  • Each vowel has a short sound and a long sound. In general, the name of the vowel is also its long sound. The short sound for A is "ae," for E it is "/e/," for I it is "/i/," for O it is "ah" and for U it is "uh." The way you pronounce the letter A in the word "apple" utilizes A's short sound. Its long sound is apparent in the pronunciation of the word "plane."

Using Short Vowels

  • Short vowels usually appear alone. Sometimes they are followed by a doubled consonant. For instance, the words jet, hat, cod, hum and lick all use short vowel sounds. Words that include the double consonant are happy, hummingbird, puppy, will and watt.

Schwa:
Schwa is the name for the most common sound in English. It is a weak, unstressed sound and it occurs in many words. It is often the sound in grammar words such as articles and prepositions.
The phonemic symbol for this sound is Schwa.
